Super 78’S New “SpongeBob SubPants Adventure,” A State-Of-The-Art 4D Interactive Digital Character Experience, Opens At Moody Gardens In Galveston, Texas
LOS ANGELES, CA, May 20, 2015 – Today, Moody Gardens officially “launched” The SpongeBob SubPants Adventure, the latest attraction from Super 78 Studios. This new immersive, interactive 3D character experience takes guests on a wild, fun-filled submarine voyage to Bikini Bottom, where they’ll meet SpongeBob, Patrick Star, and all their undersea friends. Through the use of groundbreaking technology, guests will help navigate the sub, choosing the direction of the adventure, and will have live, one-on-one conversations with Patrick.
To make the amazing interactivity of SpongeBob SubPants possible, Super 78 enlisted Geppetto,™ their custom-designed “digital puppetry” animation control system. Geppetto equips a virtual actor – or “vactor” – with a game controller and enormous touch-screen to bring the 3D-rendered Patrick to life in realtime. The vactor speaks in Patrick’s voice and makes him walk, dance, flail his arms, wag his tongue, and move in almost any way imaginable.
The attraction’s 3D media is displayed on a 25-foot-wide “observation window” screen at the front of the submarine, and is synchronized with media that plays on the four “portholes” on the sides of the theater. The immersive experience is further enhanced with numerous 4D effects like the enticing smell of roasting marshmallows, a shower of magical bubbles, vibrating seats, a real beach ball bouncing around the sub’s interior, and more unexpected surprises (especially when Plankton tries to take over the sub for his own nefarious purposes).
Super 78’s leading-edge technology was also used in the design of SpongeBob SubPants. Mushroom VR™, their proprietary “pre-experience” tool, uses the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset to provide a stunningly accurate “you are there” guest experience of the entire attraction. During the development process, the entire creative team was able to “ride” the sub in any seat, and experience the projected 3D media and all scenic and show elements.
The SpongeBob SubPants Adventure continues Super 78’s creative partnership with Nickelodeon, a relationship that began with the production of Dora & Diego’s 4D Adventure: Catch That Robot Butterfly! in 2010, and continued in 2013 with SpongeBob SquarePants 4D:The Great Jelly Rescue, an attraction that has played in 4D theaters worldwide since 2013.
“It has been a fantastic adventure bringing the world of SpongeBob to this new level of engagement at Moody Gardens,” said Brent Young, Super 78’s Creative Director. “We are really honored to apply all of our creative and technical skills to making a ‘world’s first’ attraction starring the most famous and beloved sea creatures on earth.”
